| In
recent years, there has been an increased movement towards catch
and release fisheries. However, increases in the number of released
fish may impact overall fishing mortality if release mortality is
high. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Striped
Bass Technical Committee estimated that 1.3 million striped bass
were lost due to recreational hook and line release mortality in
2000, more than the number landed by the commercial fishery during
that year. Fishing mortality in hook and line fisheries can be caused
by the type of fish hook used to catch fish. The Commission initiated
a project to evaluate the use of circle hooks to minimize discard
mortality. Recommendations from this report include the following: |
 |
- A standard
definition of circle hooks
- Recommendations
for angler education
- Recommendations
for future research, including hook eye orientation, hook offset,
hook setting methods, and species-specific hook and release
mortality studies.
