EPSA COMMENDS COMPETITIVE SUPPLIER FOR NUCLEAR POWER LEADERSHIP

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The following statement is from John E. Shelk, President and CEO of the Electric Power Supply Association (EPSA) in light of today's announcement by EPSA member NRG Energy that it has filed an application with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to build two new nuclear generating units:

"Today's announcement is a major milestone not only for nuclear power, but for the strength of competitive electricity markets. The new units proposed for the South Texas Project nuclear power station site will provide 2,700 megawatts of capacity, enough to provide power for more than two million homes.

"Competitive power suppliers like NRG Energy and other EPSA members are poised to lead the next build out of power generation as they did in the last building cycle.

"Competitive power suppliers already operate a fuel-diverse fleet including nuclear, coal, natural gas and renewable facilities, accounting for 40 percent of installed generating capacity in the United States. Today's announcement is tangible proof that competitive suppliers are in a strong position to meet the nation's future base load power needs as well as peaking and intermediate demand.

"NRG Energy is not alone. Other EPSA members are in the forefront of developing nuclear projects as well as clean coal, more efficient natural gas, and expanded renewables facilities like wind, solar and geothermal.

"Today is a great day for competitive power suppliers and competitive markets."
