EPSA Praises Action by Former State Regulators
Electricity Markets 'Empower' Consumers, 35 Former State Regulators Tell Policymakers
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Electric Power Supply Association (EPSA) today hailed an open letter signed by 35 former state regulators calling on policymakers to give competitive electricity markets the opportunity to flourish. The former regulators, representing a dozen states that span the continent, said competitive electricity markets are empowering consumers and benefiting the environment.
"As this letter shows, there is a growing recognition that competitive electricity markets have produced measurable benefits to consumers and hold great promise for more to come," EPSA President and CEO John E. Shelk said. "Competitive power generators are producing some of the cleanest and most efficient electricity in the market, resulting in reduced emissions and enhanced reliability for their customers," said Shelk. The letter cited record-setting growth in demand response and market entry by renewable resources, such as wind, as tangible benefits of competitive markets.
Shelk said the former state commissioners' letter echoes findings of a report by Dr. Susan Tierney of the Analysis Group issued by EPSA last month. The report, Decoding Developments in Today's Electric Industry, noted that competition better enables customers to manage their electricity use and employ innovative energy efficiency and demand reduction tools.
"Momentum is increasing in support of competitive electricity markets because these markets are good for consumers," said Shelk.

EPSA is the national trade association representing competitive power suppliers, including generators and marketers. These suppliers, who account for nearly 40 percent of the installed generating capacity in the United States, provide reliable and competitively priced electricity from environmentally responsible facilities serving global power markets. EPSA seeks to bring the benefits of competition to all power customers.
