AWEA Report Shows Wind Energy Still on Record Pace with Competition Leading the Way
The American Wind Energy Association released its 3rd Quarter 2008 Market Report on October 22, highlighting what is expected to be another record year for the U.S. in wind energy. According to the report, nearly 1,400 megawatts (MW) of new wind capacity was installed this quarter, bringing the total installed capacity for the year to over 4,000 MW. The report shows that 90% of the projects under construction and expected to be installed by the end of the year are being developed by competitive suppliers. Facilitating this drive for new wind energy are organized wholesale electricity markets, which have 85% of the new wind capacity installed this quarter and continue to pave the way for clean, renewable energy.
- 1,244 MW (90%) of the 1,389 MW of new capacity installed in the third quarter of 2008 was constructed by competitive suppliers.
- 1,184 MW (85%) of the new capacity installed in the third quarter was constructed in independently administered organized wholesale electricity markets with developers pointing to greater transmission and market access.
- 3,640 MW (87%) of the 4,204 MW that has been constructed year-to-date has come from competitive suppliers.
- 3,406 MW (81%) of the capacity installed this year has been constructed in wholesale electricity markets.
- 86 additional wind-powered generation units are currently under construction, totaling 8,754 MW. These projects are expected to be completed this year or in 2009. According to AWEA, over 7,500 MW of that new capacity will likely be installed by the end of the year.
- Of the capacity currently under construction, 7,864 MW (90%) belong to competitive suppliers, while 7,411 MW (85%) is being constructed in organized wholesale electricity markets.
