In
1999, a major die-off of American lobster occurred in Long Island
Sound. Federal and state funding was provided to determine the
cause of this die-off. Funding has been distributed to several
universities to conduct research into environmental stressors,
physical and chemical factors, parasites and diseases, and pesticides.
The Lobster Disease Steering Committee, which coordinates this
research initiative, provides information directly to the Commission’s
American Lobster Management Board for incorporation into the Commission’s
lobster management program.
