Research & Statistics

The Commission is involved in several regional research initiatives, coordinating and providing funding for priority research projects. The primary focus of these programs is to improve the scientific information that supports stock assessments and fisheries management. These programs include:

Marine Fisheries Initiative (MARFIN) -- has a northeast and southeast regional component and is focused on data collection, data analysis, stock assessment, and applied research projects
Marine Resources Monitoring Assessment and Prediction Program (MARMAP) -- conducted by South Carolina and is focused on improving the biological information for key South Atlantic fish species
Chesapeake Bay Stock Assessment Committee (CBSAC) -- coordinates data collection, stock assessments, and fisheries management activities for the Chesapeake Bay
Long Island Sound Lobster Research Initiative -- coordinates research focused on identifying the cause of the Long Island Sound American lobster die-off
Northeast Aquatic Nuisance Species Panel -- coordinates freshwater and marine invasive species issues

Other regional funding initaitives include:

National Whale Conservation Fund -- partnership of the National Fish and Wildllfie Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atnospheric Administration, providing funding opportunities on right whale and fishing gear research
